Proponents say grading holds students accountable for their work and provides a simple frame of reference to judge their performance in the classroom. Researcher Robert Feldmesser believes that although grades may be an source of anxiety, they also contribute to students becoming better learners. Most students see higher grades as positive acknowledgment of their achievement, while some struggle mightily to avoid the consequences of lower grades (Feldmesser 1971). Stuart Rojstaczer and Christopher Healy have argued that increasing weakening of intellectual rigor and the standards for evaluation leads students away from learning at high levels. The authors found that overconfidence was higher among male students who had lower grades point averages (GPA); that students who took higher-division courses had fewer tendencies to overestimate grades than students who took lower-division courses; that sex matters; and that increasing importance of tests reduced overconfidence. In two studies, students who formulated their prior study resource usage strategies improved performance compared to their matched classmates in the comparison groups by one-third the grade point difference of a letter grade within a grade. In the first study, students scored 3.45 percentage points higher on average in class, while the second study showed an average difference of 4.65 percentage points.
That is a key finding in a new study led by Stanford scholars, whose research published in Psychological Science found that applying a strategic study method helped undergraduates raise test scores by one-third, on average, of a letter grade.
